About Heckfire Deluxe
Heckfire Deluxe is a free online horizontal shoot 'em up and the not-so-crappy remake of our bargain-bin Heckfire. The hook is the same one late-80s arcade shooters ran on: you cannot aim. You can only choose a direction. Forward is a concentrated laser, Vertical fires columns above and below you, Diagonal covers all four corners, and Rear + Front is for whatever just snuck up behind you. Every enemy type is built to punish one direction and reward another: shield ships block your front, stacks park above and below you, wardens sprint past and shoot you in the back.
Scoring is skill-based. Kills build a chain that pushes the multiplier up to 8×, and bullets that barely miss your tiny hitbox count as grazes that keep the chain alive. Six themed stages (an asteroid belt, a cavern with turret-lined walls, a fleet review, an ion storm with lightning strikes, and the Black Nebula core) each end in a distinct boss: a gate, a worm, twin pylons, a teleporting warden, a spinning laser spindle and the core itself. Beat a boss and you pick one of three permanent upgrades, from option drones and piercing rounds to an item magnet and an overdrive that fires all four directions when you switch weapons. Finish stage six and it loops, harder, for as long as you can keep a ship.
Everything is drawn on the fly and every sound and the soundtrack are synthesised in your browser, so there is nothing to download. Keyboard, mouse steering, gamepad and touch are all supported. The Hangar in Settings lets you repaint the ship, pick a starting weapon, and switch to Casual or Heck difficulty for practice runs. Your best score, best stage and lifetime stats save locally, and Arcade-difficulty scores go to the global High Scores page when you are signed in.
How to Play Heckfire Deluxe
- Fly with WASD or the arrow keys, steer with the mouse, use the left stick or d-pad on a gamepad, or drag anywhere on the playfield on a phone. Your ship always fires.
- Press Z, Space, click, A on a gamepad, or SWAP on a phone to cycle the four weapon directions. Keys 1 to 4 pick one directly.
- Press X, right-click, B on a gamepad, or HECKFIRE on a phone to bomb: it wipes every bullet and enemy on screen and hurts the boss.
- Hold Shift or C to focus. You move at half speed and the hitbox and graze ring are drawn so you can thread bullet patterns.
- Collect P for power, S for speed, B for bonus points, the ring for a temporary shield and the bomb icon for an extra HECKFIRE. Getting hit costs one level of power and speed.
- Survive the stage, beat the boss, pick one of three upgrades, and keep going. Extra ships arrive at 50,000 points and at score milestones after that.
Tips & Tricks
- Read the enemy, then pick the direction. Shield ships want Vertical or Diagonal, stacks want Vertical, wardens want Rear + Front. Forward is for everything in a straight line.
- Grazing is free points and free chain time. When the chain bar is about to empty, brushing a bullet buys you a few tenths of a second.
- Do not bank bombs for a rainy day. Every stage clear pays a bonus per unused bomb, but a dead ship pays nothing.
- The Twin Pylons core is shielded until both pylons are down. Everything else on that boss is a distraction.
- Option Drone plus Spread Shot is the strongest early pick. Item Magnet is the most relaxing one.
Heckfire Deluxe FAQ
How is Heckfire Deluxe different from Heckfire?
Same idea, real production values. The original is a 300-line joke with four weapon directions and a bomb. Deluxe keeps that hook and adds chain and graze scoring, focus movement, eight enemy types that each reward a specific direction, six themed stages with hazards, six bosses with phases, a pick-one-of-three upgrade after every boss, endless loops, synthesised music, gamepad and touch support, and settings that save.
Does Heckfire Deluxe work on phones or with a gamepad?
Yes to both. On a phone, drag anywhere on the playfield to fly (the ship follows your finger relative to where it started, so your thumb never covers it), and use the SWAP and HECKFIRE buttons. Rotate to landscape and use the fullscreen button for the biggest playfield. With a controller: left stick or d-pad moves, A or X swaps weapons, B or Y bombs, LB or LT focuses, Start pauses.
Do Casual and Heck scores count on the leaderboard?
No. Arcade is the balanced difficulty and the only one that submits to the global High Scores page. Casual and Heck are practice runs and are labelled as such on the game over screen. Ship paint and starting weapon never affect eligibility.
What happens after stage six?
The game loops. Enemies get more health, fire faster and shoot quicker bullets, boss health scales up, and the stage counter keeps climbing. There is no ending, only a high score.
