About Tzompantli: The Causeway
Tzompantli: The Causeway is a free online lane tower defense game with a grimy, stencilled, Aztec-inspired look. Four lanes of causeway run from the altar end to the pens. Not every lane is open at once — flagged lanes are live, hatched lanes are shut — and the stock bolts down whichever ones are.
You pick a rite from the rail and post it on a stone. Knifemen cut down whatever walks past. Other rites slow, burn, or bleed the stock for extra blood — which is your only currency. Carve a posted rite up a level, or tear it down for part of your blood back. It's a tower defense game that looks like a photocopied zine and plays like a lane-based puzzle.
How to Play Tzompantli: The Causeway
- Select a rite from the rail at the side of the screen.
- Tap or click an empty stone on an open (flagged) causeway lane to post it.
- Stock runs left to right. Anything that reaches the pens costs you.
- Tap or click a posted rite to upgrade it or tear it down for a partial refund.
- Watch which lanes are open — they change, and a shut lane needs no defense.
Tips & Tricks
- Blood spent on upgrades is usually better than blood spent on new rites.
- Slowing rites early in the lane make every knifeman behind them more effective.
- When a lane shuts, tear down its rites and reinvest in the live lanes.
Tzompantli: The Causeway FAQ
What is a tzompantli?
A tzompantli was a wooden rack used in Mesoamerican cultures to display skulls. The game borrows the name and the mood, not the history lesson.
Is Tzompantli: The Causeway free?
Yes, it's a free browser game. No download, no account.
Why is it so hard?
Because it's a crappy browser game and balance is a suggestion. Focus on open lanes and upgrade instead of spreading thin.
